Nick Tosches, een schrijver, ontdekt dat een manuscript van Dante's Goddelijke Komedie, gestolen uit het Vaticaan, weer is opgedoken in New York. Omdat hij deze kans niet kan missen, besluit Nick te proberen dit manuscript te authenticeren en de oorsprong, de reis en die van de auteur te onderzoeken.
