Originally, the eleventh installment of the main “Fast & Furious” series was announced for next year. The film, starring Vin Diesel (57), is set to continue the story from 2023’s Fast & Furious 10 and bring the highly successful franchise, which began in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, to a conclusion. However, the project has recently been pushed back to 2026. Now, franchise star Diesel has shared an update on social media, revealing a more specific release date.
How Many “Fast & Furious” Films Will There Be?
“I have Universal in one ear,” Diesel begins his Instagram post, referencing Universal Studios, the company behind the high-octane franchise. According to him, the studio is aiming for a release of “‘FastX2’ in March 2026.” This would seem to be a realistic release date for the blockbuster if filming for Fast & Furious 11 starts early next year as previously suggested.
However, Diesel also mentions: “I have Comcast in the other ear. They’re saying we need a two-part finale.”
Dwayne Johnson in a Key Role?
Comcast, the parent company of Universal Studios, has reportedly been considering a two-part finale for some time. Additionally, other projects are already in development, including a female-led spin-off and a new Dwayne Johnson film that could bridge the gap between Fast & Furious 10 and 11.
This latter project could facilitate the return of fan-favorite Dwayne Johnson (52), despite his past feud with Diesel. The plan would allow Johnson to rejoin the franchise without directly sharing screen time with Diesel. Diesel would likely not appear in the Johnson-led film.
However, Diesel also commented on this in his new post, mentioning that a prominent screenwriter of the Fast & Furious series believes that his character, Dominic Toretto, and Johnson’s Luke Hobbs should reconcile.
The Future of the Franchise Remains Uncertain
Diesel’s Instagram post leaves the future of the franchise somewhat open-ended. What seems certain for now is that an eleventh film will be released. Whether more films will follow and the extent of Dwayne Johnson’s involvement remains to be seen.
