“Having a big ego is not as bad to me as having bad taste,” the 38-year-old actor told the magazine “Der Spiegel” in an advance excerpt from Friday. He admires director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who was infamous for his mood swings.

“I know the stories about his outbursts,” Rogowski said. “But Fassbinder made a few really great films and thus gave back more to his actors than some nice directors who just churn out one cheap hit after another and then disappear.”

Rogowski himself has a penchant for complex characters. “It’s exciting to play a character that isn’t immediately cast in a clear light but instead creates friction,” he said. Looking back, the actor described his school days as “traumatic.” It overwhelmed him early on to try to fit in.
