Kevin Costner Celebrates New Western Film in Berlin

Berlin (dpa) – Fans in cowboy outfits celebrate a Hollywood icon: Kevin Costner has come to Berlin for the German premiere of his new film. “Horizon – An American Saga” is Costner’s first directorial project in 21 years. The 69-year-old’s film is conceived as a four-part Western epic.

The first three-hour part will be released in German cinemas on August 22. “Horizon” is set in 1861 New Mexico. The film tells the story of white Americans occupying Apache territories during their westward journey, with the Apaches resisting the land seizure. Alongside Costner, the cast includes Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington.

Costner’s first Western as a director, “Dances with Wolves” from 1990, won seven Oscars. Before “Horizon,” his last Western, “Open Range,” was released in 2003. In recent years, Costner has starred in the acclaimed Western series “Yellowstone” by Taylor Sheridan.

With “Horizon,” Costner is taking a risk. He had been pursuing the idea for the film for over 30 years but couldn’t reach an agreement with any production company. Ultimately, after several failed financing attempts, he invested his own money into the film, as he mentioned in interviews. In 2009, he even named his son Hayes after a protagonist in the film
