An extra was banned from the Wicked set after asking Ariana Grande for a selfie.
The new film adaptation of the classic Broadway musical, which hits theaters on Friday (November 22), was kept under wraps as much as possible until the end. The production wanted to avoid any leaks of images from the set, including props and costumes, at all costs. As a result, a strict no-phone policy was enforced, especially for extras. However, one young woman, who was playing a student at Shiz University in Oz, disregarded the rules—and was promptly removed from the set.
A set insider revealed exclusively to the BANG Showbiz news agency: “There were a lot of younger people on the Shiz University set, and there were multiple issues because someone kept tweeting the whole time, even though phones weren’t allowed.” The extra in question reportedly also broke the rules by asking Glinda actress Ariana Grande for a selfie. “She even went up to Ariana and asked if Ariana could take a picture with her phone and send it to her. That got her kicked off the set.”
Additionally, the film’s security team kept a close watch to ensure no cast members left the set in costume, where they might be photographed by paparazzi. However, this didn’t entirely stop leaks. “We saw drones filming us in the sky every day,” the insider said. Leaked videos and photos from private drone footage, such as scenes from Munchkinland or Shiz University, have already been circulating online for weeks.
